A stunning new Hubble Space Telescope image reveals how stars are formed inside clouds of gas and dust.
The NASA image (right) shows bright blue young stars emitting ultraviolet radiation within a giant mass of mostly hydrogen gas, which serves as an incubator for new stars.
Most of the radiation comes from the single star, pictured just above the centre of the image, withing the nebula known as NGC 2467.
This star-forming region is located in the southern constellation of Puppis and is 13,000 light years from Earth.
